Biozone I

Registration and Information

Collecting at Gulf BeachSession I

Days will be filled with interactive learning activities about animals, plants, dinosaurs, rocks and minerals, and other topics; special viewing of specimens from the Yale Peabody Museum’s exceptional collections; exciting field trips, and more. The art and science behind natural history dioramas will be the common thread throughout the week. Your child will end the program with a new understanding of the rich interplay among living and nonliving entities on earth in this unforgettable experience.

Session II

Biozone II provides an unparalleled opportunity for kids to learn about the Yale Peabody Museum’s extraordinary holdings and to work with Museum staff to collect, identify, and prepare their own unique set of specimens, some of which will be formally accessioned into the Museum’s collections! In addition, the program will include exciting field trips and interactive learning activities about animals, plants, dinosaurs, rocks and minerals, and more.

Survival!

July 14–18, 2008

Registration and Information

If you were transported back in time 10,000 years, could you survive?

Learn to build a shelter Learn the skills that ancient peoples used, including fire-making, tracking, flint-knapping and rope-making, and basic knowledge of edible wild plants.

The Yale Peabody Museum’s archaeological collections of primitive tools will be the inspiration for your efforts, and the week will end with a campout on Thursday night in your own hand-built shelter!

Bones & Stones: Peabody Anthropology Camp

July 21–25, 2008
For entering 4th, 5th and 6th graders

On an archaeological digIf you have always been interested in ancient cultures and archaeology, this camp is for you!

Each day of this 5-day program will be devoted to different topics, including archaeology, cultural anthropology, forensic anthropology, Egyptology and art history. Behind-the-scenes tours of the Yale Peabody Museum’s collections, local field trips including a real archaeological dig, and lots of exciting hands-on activities are planned.

Expeditions!

Collecting environmental data
Expeditions! is a hands-on summer science experience for students interested in doing real science in the real world!

The journey will begin with investigations of the world-renowned Yale Peabody Museum collections, followed by three excursions to freshwater sites to explore the environment and collect meaningful scientific data.

Expeditions! is meant to be an engaging, hands-on, brains-on (oh yeah, and let’s not forget FUN!) experience for older kids interested in the environment and natural sciences.

Through arts and crafts, games, hands-on activities, and explorations of the Museum and beyond, children will discover why dinosaurs are so captivating, and how birds are today’s dinosaurs!

Session I

Yale astronomy exhibitWe are pleased to include entering 3rd graders in this session of our popular camp all about astronomy and space! We’ll build models, look through telescopes, observe the sun with Yale astronomers, learn about the night sky in a planetarium, and visit the Peabody’s fantastic collection of meteorites.

Parents Be Advised: These engaging and extremely fun field trips will NOT leave the stratosphere!

Session II

In this fun and engaging camp all about astronomy and space we’ll build and launch model rockets, look through telescopes, observe the sun with Yale astronomers, learn about the night sky in a planetarium, and even visit the Peabody’s fantastic collection of meteorites. Special field trips (different from last year) and guest visits will make the week out of this world!

Illustrating Nature: Peabody Art Camp

August 4–8, 2008

Illustrating butterfly specimens
From The Age of Reptiles mural in the Great Hall and the exquisitely painted backdrops of our dioramas to the life-size Torosaurus sculpture outside the Museum, natural history art is an integral part of the Peabody.

In this camp, expert instructors will introduce you to techniques in various media, including pencil, ink, watercolor and clay. One field trip will complement in-house specimen-based work, and all materials will be provided.

Fantastic Fossils

The Yale Peabody Museum is well known for its magnificent collection of dinosaur bones, but do you know about our highly regarded collections of other fossil vertebrates, invertebrates and plants?

Devote a whole week to paleontology, from visits to the collection rooms and fossil preparation lab to fossil casting, bone reconstruction and other cool activities, capped off by an overnight field trip to collection sites in New York State!

Terra Firma: Peabody Geology Camp

Make your own collections!
As far as we are concerned, rocks rock! We’ll visit nearby quarries while learning why rocks and minerals are uniquely important parts of our everyday lives, past and present.

Activities will include arts and crafts, music and dance, plus the chance to start or add to your own rock collection. And we’ll go behind the scenes in the Peabody’s mineralogy division, including an in-depth look at our new Hall of Minerals, Earth, and Space.

Registration and Information

At the Yale Peabody Museum, it is our goal to engage your child in a hands-on experience that promises to be both challenging and fun!

Below you will find a button that links to the online registration forms necessary to secure your child’s spot in one or more of our programs. Complete all required fields, and all other fields to the extent possible. This registration and your non-refundable deposit holds your child’s place in our Summer Youth Program.

Programs run daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Before-care (8:00–9:00am) and after-care (4:00–5:00pm) services are available for an additional $30 per week, per service.

There is no registration deadline; however, interested participants are advised to submit applications early as individual program sessions may fill.

A limited number of full and partial need-based scholarships are available. To be eligibile, those seeking scholarships must apply by April 15, 2008 (you will be asked to submit copies of your family’s most recent tax documents). Other restrictions apply.
