On the way to their first case, Dr. Watson asks Sherlock Holmes who he thinks is responsible for a murder. Holmes replies, "It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data." In modern parlance, this illustrates the tension between "premature diagnostic closure" and "keeping an open mind." Jonathan A. Edlow, M.D., F.A.C.P., vice chair of emergency medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and associate professor of medicine, Harvard Medical School, will tell us about the diagnostic process that doctors use and how sometimes they must play the role of detective. Many cases are routine, but some are not. Using examples from his book and his experience, Dr. Edlow will discuss some interesting cases of tough diagnostic problems and their solutions. Book signing to follow. |
