Herpetofauna of the Americas

The herpetology holdings in the Yale Peabody Museum’s Division of Vertebrate Zoology has collections of amphibians and reptiles from throughout Middle America, including the nations of Panama, Costa Rica and Guatemala.

Middle America

In recent years the Museum has renewed its interest in the herpetofauna of this region (which includes Mexico, Central America, and the islands of the Caribbean) with new fieldwork in Costa Rica and El Salvador.

This work has resulted in several publications (see Postilla 231, “Notes on a Collection of Amphibians and Reptiles from El Salvador,” by T.A.A.M. Leenders and G.J. Watkins-Colwell, 2004). Current plans include life history and behavior-based fieldwork with Middle American salamanders.

The Yale Peabody Museum’s collections are available to legitimate researchers for scholarly use. Loans are issued to responsible individuals at established institutions. Loans and access to the collection can be arranged through the Collections Manager.
